All About Chess Game & Certificates
Chess is an ancient game which has its origin probably in India. However many historians strongly argue that it has its roots in ancient China. There is no strong evidence to support the above claim but yes, in ancient India there was indeed a board game which was then known as “Chaturanga”.Ancient Indians kings and emperors were very fond of this game which demands intelligence.
It is played by two players who sit opposite each other with the chess board in between them. The chess board consists of eight rows which are also known as ranks and eight columns. The squares on a chess board is also in alternate white and black color. Both of the players start the game with a total 16 pieces which they can move strategically only in defined directions.
History of chess
It is strongly believed that the game of chess has its origin in India in the north-western part around 550 CE, but at that time, it was nowhere close to the game that is played in the modern times. There were also no standard rules at that time and Indian kings play the game with rules that vary greatly from one region to another. It was around 600 CE, the game spread to Persia. It was then used to teach princes about the war tactics from an early age. The game underwent some major changes under the Persian Empire but later on when it fell into the hands of Muslims, the game get refined all the more.
As the Abbasid and Umayyad Empires have at that time strong trade relations with rest of the world like Europe, Russia, Far-east and Africa, the game also spread to those regions gradually in their refined form. At present, the game is played with great enthusiasm across the world in coffee shops, clubs, etc. Even chess tournaments are organized on an annual basis in many schools. While local tournaments last for one hour to two hours, international tournaments even last for 5-6 hours.
Why chess is so popular as a game?
Chess is so popular as a game as it not just a game where a player can win by his or her sheer luck. The game needs good skills of critical thinking and planning accurate strategies that can lead to a win. The game is also extremely complex and those with a sharp mind get inclined to the same naturally. In the medieval period, all over Asia and the Europe, it was a game of the people who have power or enjoy a high position in their society as the game was then looked upon as an abstract war game that increases mental abilities.
